It's not shown what species these were supposed to have represented, however the only species we know of that we co-habitated with are the D's and the N's, and neither were Sasquatch looking cannibal mofos you know what I mean?Ĭavemen were 100% human, and would not have looked any different than a modern human other than nutritional and developmental differences.

I don't disagree with your arguments about the science, but never the less the movie portrays other species as almosty boogyman like cannibals. Oddly in this case the more sophisticated tribe wore far less clothing than the primitives. And they were hardly cavemen, as they lived in individual wattle and daub huts, and knew the secret of making fire. The bulk of the nudity actually occurs when they encounter the tribe that Rae Dawn Chong is member of. As for the nudity, yes the primitives depicted were shown naked, but much of their bodies were covered. Trained animals that have been raised by humans can be extremely docile, even lions. The Bantha's ridden by the Sand People on Tatooine were in fact Asian elephants that had been dressed up. In fact it had already been done by George Lucas in the original Star Wars. As for the elephants being used, it wasn't strange at all for the time. Also being that the movie is 40 years old I can quite forgive the special effects. The confirmation of their existence occurred quite recently, within the last few years. As for the Denisovans, since the film was made in 1980 there would've been no knowledge of them anyway. Neanderthals had no resemblance to any of the species the protagonists encounter. And neither one was depicted in the film. Īctually Neanderthals, as well as Denisovans lived 10's of thousands of years ago, closely resembling each other in appearance. Somebody had the audacity to shoot this film, and to give it a serious attempt, with serious actors, acting at the height of their game, and it just works. And the environment the film is shot in seems to go from boggy Scottish moor, to African savannah, to Canadian Rocky's in spite of our protagonists being on foot for presumably only a number of weeks. There is nothing remotely accurate about the depiction of cavemen or the other human like species we likely met thousands of years ago like the Neandrethals and Denisovans. So somebody's job description read "Cover Asian elephants in fake fur, masks, and makeup to make them look like wooly mamoths." And somebody elses job description read "Control and train these blind, makeup laden pachyderms as a herd, and get them to interact with living, fragile, people, on camera." And there are wide shots of a HERD of these things, all with elephant trunks, walking together in the wild. Take an elephant, stick a very fake looking woolly mammoth head over it's real head, and attempt to.direct.a blind, uncomfortable, elephant, around people who could be trampled to death.And yet.it's hard to refute the fact that a real elephant trunk can be seen in the scenes, dangling out of that fake mammoth head, doing elephant things that no practical effects could mimic. Especially elephants covered in fake hair and masks that hide their real heads to make them look like mammoths. There is NO WAY any movie that wasn't hell bent on killing the actors, would ever let a HERD of elephants interact with the actors. Who's up for that?"īut that pales in comparison to the woolly mammoths. I imagine the conversation went something like "Hey, how are we doing sabertooth tigers? Hmm I was thinking we glue big teeth to a real lions mouth. I don't know who's job it was to put authentic sabertooth dentures into the mouths of living, and very dangerous, African lions, but that is what they did.
Lets start with the sabertooth tigers.There are live African lions in the movie, with saber tooth teeth somehow affixed to their actual teeth. Like I can't believe a serious movie ever thought to use some of these effects, and yet they did, and while obviously janky, it's also kind of brilliant.
On the one hand they are as crude and janky as you could ever imagine. No exposition, no dialogue, nothing but what the camera shows you.īut what really cemented this movie for me as something unique, is the special effects. The entire movie and all of the story telling is done through acting and directing. You might hear sounds, but they aren't words. Secondly, the movie is almost entirely without dialogue. And they are off the leash with their performances. Cave men and women wear furs most of the time, but nothing underneath them.įirst of all, Ron Pearlman and Everett McGill are in it, and you can still recognize them even with the makeup. I was too young to see this film when I was a kid as it contains frequent nudity.
